Winegrowing at Arenenberg has a long tradition - even in Napoleon's time, wine was pressed here. Today, the site combines history and the future: the historic wine cellar is now open to the public. In the medieval vaults, guests are accompanied by the fictional winegrower Silvana from late antiquity, charmingly commented on by the Roman god of wine, Bacchus. His sculptures and the legend of the mysterious Nebelmännle vom See build bridges between past and present. A modern vineyard is being created right next to it - and a special anniversary is also being celebrated: The history of Thurgau began here exactly 100 years ago.
Lake Constance celebrates wine! Why? In 1925, the winegrower lbert Röhrenbach and the fisherman Gottfried Ainser secretly smuggled 400 cuttings of the Thurgau vine across Lake Constance to save the ailing winegrowing industry in Germany. A regular purchase was not possible as there was a complex trade war between Switzerland and Germany at the time. The night-time journey in a small rowing boat was fraught with danger, as they had to pass through customs borders undetected. Johann Baptist Röhrenbach, the initiator of the smuggling, firmly believed in the potential of the grape variety, but was prevented from officially cultivating it by his superiors. Despite this resistance, Thurgau spread throughout the region and later became the driving force behind the German wine boom. This historic event will be celebrated with the Smuggler's Journey on August 30, 2025.
Five museums in Thurgau are putting on joint exhibitions on the history of viticulture and its importance for the region: the Napoleon Museum Arenenberg, the Museum of Archaeology, the Nature Museum, the History Museum and the Art and Ittinger Museum. The exhibitions tell of the diversity of varieties, smuggling stories and the Thurgau grape variety, the 150th anniversary of which will be celebrated in 2025. A common theme, presented in five individual exhibitions. Visitors can look forward to a varied program of special tours, special exhibitions and exciting children's programs.
