Wine trail in Weinfelden

An excursion to the Weinfelden wine trail on the Thurgau Ottenberg is a pleasure at any time of year. The wine trail leads through the pretty little town, through the middle of the vineyards, past various wineries. A chilled drop of wine awaits those who can crack the code in the wine safe along the route.

Right through the vineyards
The nine-kilometre circular trail leads through the vineyards of Weinfelden, Boltshausen and Ottoberg and can easily be completed in three hours. Time and again, hikers are treated to sweeping views of the Thur valley and the Alps. Along the way, over 30 information boards provide interesting facts about vine development and varieties, wine production and the local winegrowers. Along the way, restaurants and taverns serve Thurgau specialties.
The special highlight on the route is a wine safe where hikers can quench their thirst. If you enter the correct code, the safe opens and a hydraulic pump raises the fine wines from the cooling depths to eye level. The equipment, including a glass, herbal chips to nibble on and the code, can be found in the practical wine backpack. This can be purchased at the SBB station counter in Weinfelden. Please reserve in advance.

"The adventure winery is a successful combination of tradition, innovation and sustainability"

The Weinfelden Wine Trail passes several wineries. One of these is the Burkhart adventure winery, which has been run by the same family for seven generations. The adventure winery is a successful combination of tradition, innovation and sustainability and offers eleven grape varieties on seven hectares, which in turn produce more than twenty different wines. The Burkhart winery is complemented by an event building with an open space spread over two floors. Guests are delighted by the magnificent view over the Thur valley. The room is ideal for a wide variety of uses, such as workshops, seminars, drinks receptions or dinners with wine accompaniment.

"Pinot Noir and Thurgau ripen particularly well here."

Within sight of Weinfelden train station, Reto Lüchinger and his wife Sybille have created a gastronomic institution with the Gasthof Eisenbahn. Head chef Reto Lüchinger consistently focuses on quality and local produce, and the restaurant even has its own trout farm. Naturally, guests can also sample a large selection of regional wines from the Ottenberg. "The door to our kitchen is always open, anyone can come and have a look," says Lüchinger. He stands behind the pot and pan himself every day and knows exactly what goes down well with guests. Veal liver with rösti, trout and game from the region are the house classics. If you don't want to drive home after enjoying your meal, the best place to stay is in one of the new hotel rooms in the inn's former beer depot.
Weinfelden is very easy and quick to reach with the Thurbo regional train. Traveling by public transport is recommended so that the wines along the wine trail can be tasted and no one has to worry about a safe journey home. Thurbo is the ideal transportation partner for excursions in the Thurgau Constance region.

"Hiking among the vines, enjoying the view and a glass of wine along the way - the Weinfelden Wine Trail is the perfect mix of experience and enjoyment."
