Museums for children

Travel back in time today, explore the universe tomorrow - anything is possible in Thurgau . In the child-friendly museums around Lake Constance, exhibitions are transformed into stages for great stories: Climb into flashing racing cars, discover medieval secrets or take off into distant galaxies. Each museum is a new chapter, each station an adventure of its own.

Spanning approximately 1,500 square meters, the Lake Museum in Kreuzlingen presents fascinating and interesting exhibits on the history of shipping and fishing on Lake Constance. Children have the opportunity to marvel at original fishing equipment, vintage sailing yachts, and artifacts found on the lakebed. For a quick snack, the Café Seemuseum offers homemade cakes and primarily regional products.
The Thurgau Nature Museum, which was awarded the Swiss Prix Museum in 2020, is located in the old town of Frauenfeld. It takes visitors on a journey of discovery through the nature of the local region. Over 1000 plant and animal specimens, from tiny beetles to mighty bears, are exhibited on three floors. A true-to-life replica of a beaver lodge and live ants are just as fascinating as various interactive "be-greif" stations, consisting of petting furs, puzzles and painting stations. In the children's podcast "Theo erzählt", probably Switzerland's youngest podcaster, and in the song tour, a Thurgau songwriter with music, guide you through the exhibition. Admission is free of charge.
We've long known that chocolate makes you happy. But how does happiness get into chocolate? The happiness researchers at the Chocolarium in Flawil explain how it works on a tour through the dreamy chocolate experience. In addition to exciting insights into the production facilities of the famous Munz and Minor chocolates, there's a new highlight: the Happiness Room with five chocolate fountains. Fancy trying them all? Touchscreens record your own taste experience. The result: your very own chocolate happiness profile. A sophisticated ceiling mirror and customizable sayings invite you to capture your experience and share it with your loved ones.
The Historical Museum in Frauenfeld is a place for every generation. Here, history comes alive and the past can be experienced at the original historical setting, Frauenfeld Castle. With its thick walls and tower, it delights young knights and damsels alike, as do the Knights' Cellar and the Armory. While adults are captivated by the elegant exhibition architecture and marvel at world-class works of art, children of all ages find the best entertainment with specially designed activities: the Leuli Trail for the little ones, an exciting puzzle card set with Kati and Sven, where twelve objects are examined closely, and a digital scavenger hunt for all smartphone freaks. Admission is free.
The beautifully preserved grounds of Ittingen Charterhouse are not only a former Carthusian monastery, but also home to the Thurgau Art Museum and the Ittingen Museum. Here you can trace the life of the monks and experience tranquillity, marvel at art and encounter works by Adolf Dietrich, one of the masters of the Lake Constance region. In the Atelierklause, children can be inspired by the many materials on display and become artistically active themselves. The short radio play "Be still" tells adults and children exciting stories about life in the monastery. Afterwards, it is clear what a decorated skull means or whether the monks actually played billiards.
On an exciting tour, visitors to the Museum of Archaeology in Frauenfeld explore 10,000 years of the Canton of Thurgau's past. The finds from the local pile dwellings - a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2011 - provide interesting information about everyday life in the Lake Constance region thousands of years ago. Highlights include the oldest gold vessel in Switzerland and a Gallo-Roman wooden statue. Exciting temporary exhibitions complete the offer. The new member of staff, Archie the badger, takes families on a search for clues through the museum, lets them look for details in the display cases and encourages them to draw and do handicrafts. There is a reward for the correct answer.
The entire world of apples, the role of bees, and everything related to apple juice can be discovered interactively using all of the senses at the MoMö in Arbon. The various hands-on stations and peepholes are a highlight even for toddlers (from about 3 years old). And after a museum visit, little ones can let off steam outdoors in the orchard. While parents quietly enjoy a Möhl juice, children can have fun on the playground with its apple slide or discover the various inhabitants of the towers of life. On the wild bee educational trail, visitors also learn why the most effective flower pollinators don't sting, are particularly hardworking, and are considered essential for flower fertilization.
The autobau Erlebniswelt in Romanshorn transports visitors to the realm of automobile racing. The listed halls of the former tank depot house a unique vehicle collection and a special experience area. Two halls and the gigantic steel tank display vehicles from motor racing as well as luxury sports cars, from soapbox cars to Formula 1 racing cars. What's special is that the rare exhibits aren't behind barriers, but can be experienced with all the senses. The steel tank in the polygon and the racing hall provide insight into the career of a racing driver. The Classic Hall showcases "boyhood dreams" of the road – current luxury cars and sleek vintage cars from various countries are on display.
In a former locomotive depot in Romanshorn, the Locorama Railway Adventure World presents a collection of historic locomotives and carriages during the summer months. Where the railway first arrived in 1855, visitors can now admire a 1912 steam tender locomotive, various mail, passenger, and freight cars, the turntable, and the former signal bridge with eight signals. The interactive "in motion" concept also offers the opportunity to drive a steam garden railway or model railway, operate a water crane, or operate a signal box.
Off into the infinite expanse of the universe! What was once reserved for scholars and scientists can now be experienced for every child at the Bodensee Planetarium in Kreuzlingen. The Bodensee Planetarium brings the night sky within reach, even in broad daylight. Images projected onto the interior of the domed roof by a large projector provide new perspectives on the sky and stars. The time-lapse orbits of all the planets, as well as the phases of the moon and constellations, are also visually presented. The Bodensee Planetarium offers special shows for children ages 3 and up.
Children at Arenenberg Castle feel like real princes and princesses as they roam the stately home on the Untersee, dressed in crinolines and uniforms. Today, little aristocrats can dress up in the place where the last Emperor of the French spent his childhood on special children's tours or go on a treasure hunt in the castle grounds, wearing rubber boots and equipped with a flashlight.
