Wine and nature in the Seebach Valley

Nestled between the hills of the Seerücken and the Thur Valley lies the Seebach Valley in Thurgau - a natural jewel of national importance. The once almost destroyed habitats of flora and fauna have been successfully restored. The Haag family lives not far from this natural paradise in Hüttwilen in their own personal little paradise of viticulture.

Natural jewel Seebachtal
The Seebachtal valley, consisting of the three lakes Hüttwilersee, Nussbaumersee and Hasensee, is once again an island of biodiversity in Thurgau. This was not always the case. The species-rich habitat of the shallow water zones was lost when the shores of the lakes were drained during the Battle of Cultivation in the Second World War. The establishment of the Seebachtal Foundation to protect the three lakes put an end to this. After many renaturations, numerous animal and plant species are once again living in the valley. Nature is once again at its most beautiful and invites you to go on a voyage of discovery.
Discover the Seebach Valley and its wines
The Seebachtal valley, in which Hüttwilen is located, offers a wonderful nature experience. Winemaker Nicole Haag recommends a hike through the natural paradise of Seebachtal, which leads from the Haag winery in Hüttwilen through the vineyards and then along the renaturalized shores of Lake Hüttwilen and Lake Nussbaumersee. Various bathing spots invite you to jump into the cool water and linger. The mostly free lake access points are also recommended outside the bathing season: there are wonderful views of the lakes and infrastructure such as seating, toilets and barbecue areas are available. Once the lakes have been circumnavigated, a tasting of the fine wines of Haags at the end of the tour will refresh tired hikers. The obstacle-free route 918 on signposted hiking trails, which leads from Nussbaumen to Ittingen Charterhouse and also through the middle of the Seebachtal valley, is also ideal for wheelchairs and baby carriages.

"Preserving the past, but always learning new things - because tradition gives rise to innovation."

In nearby Hüttwilen, the climate is ideal on the four hectares of land where the Haag family, now in its sixth generation, nurtures and cares for ripening grapes. With great expertise and passion, Urs and Nicole Haag from Haag Weine create first-class and characteristic wines. Preserving the past, but also constantly learning new things is important to the family, because tradition gives rise to innovation.
Wine growing and care
At Haags, great importance is attached to first-class cultivation. Healthy, vital grapes thrive in small quantities on vines with dense foliage. The different varieties are given their individual character and emphasized, artificial changes and designer wines are far removed from the family. National and international awards in recent years show that the Haags are on the right track: Haags are on the right track.
Tasting Nicole's favorite wine
Nicole Haag goes into raptures when she talks about her favorite home-grown wine, the Goldgrüebli. It is a sparkling aperitif wine! With a fine balance of sweetness and acidity, sparkling and stimulating. A floral bouquet, accompanied by citrus fruits on the nose, with a nutmeg note on the finish. Who could resist? The Goldgrüebli and the eight other Haags creations can be tasted between the 400-year-old foundation walls of the residential building that houses the vinotheque.
