Spend the night where Thurgau made history

In the Lake Constance canton, you can live like a Carthusian monk, spend the night next door to Benedictine monks, reside like a wealthy Bischofszell cloth merchant or the lady of the castle in the moated castle of yesteryear. Impressive architectural monuments are open for overnight stays or as restaurants and allow you to experience Thurgau's history at first hand. Below is a compilation of some of our favorites.

Carthusian monks once lived as silent hermits in the former monastery of Ittingen Charterhouse. Today, guests can spend their vacations here - if they wish, in a former monk's hermitage, the small house with garden that each monk lived in alone. The hermitage has been gently renovated and simply furnished. The deliberate reduction of the interior is reminiscent of the lonely, quiet life of the Carthusian monks and creates the true luxury of peace and the opportunity to pause for a moment in the power place of Ittingen Charterhouse. The small garden in front of the hermitage is also part of the experience, as it once was for the Carthusians. The offer can be booked for two people for one week from March to November. Those interested can learn about the history of the Carthusian monks during a guided tour of Ittingen Charterhouse or in the Ittingen Museum.
The five spacious Jacob 1808 vacation apartments for two to four people are located in two houses in the heart of the historic baroque town of Bischofszell. They were home to cloth merchants, master saddlers, innkeepers and even Bischofszell municipal councillors. This cultural heritage has been carefully preserved with the help of the Office for the Preservation of Historical Monuments. Historic monastery tiles, creaking floorboards, impressive stucco ceilings and wood paneling, paired with modern furniture, bathrooms and kitchens, create a wonderful composition of historical elements and stylish contemporary comfort.
Resting in the monastery of the pine cone forest Five Benedictine monks still live and work in Fischingen today, giving the only active monastery in Thurgau a special and contemplative atmosphere. This place of power helps you escape the hectic pace of everyday life. Overnight stays here are in former monks' cells with stylish architecture and subtle monastic accents. Whether at a concert in the baroque library, taking part in the monks' prayers, meditating or on a guided tour through eventful history - Fischingen Monastery inspires and promises a time-out in the quiet green surroundings of Tannzapfenland. The monastery brewery and restaurant spoil you with excellent Pilgrim beer and outstanding regional cuisine.
Today, the listed villa "Mon Repos" in Aadorf is home to a bed and breakfast and is being lovingly renovated step by step by the owners. It was originally built in 1905 for the industrialist and founder of the Griesser company, a traditional Aadorf company that now operates internationally. Two guest rooms for up to four people are located in high-ceilinged rooms with wallpaper, parquet floors and chandeliers. Playful bay windows, balconies and a park-like garden create a nostalgically beautiful feeling and memories of times gone by.
Hagenwil Castle is one of the best-preserved moated castles in Switzerland. You can feel the magic of this place as soon as you cross the drawbridge, watch the ducks in the moat and listen to the splashing of the fountain. The old walls whisper of bygone times, the rooms in their original state sparkle with romance and the excellent Biedermeier-style restaurant promises true culinary delights. Tip: The "Romantic time-out" offer! This includes a welcome cocktail, dinner in the grandmother's parlor, an overnight stay in a four-poster room and a late riser's breakfast. On request, there is a guided tour of the castle and exciting facts about the history, knights and castle ghosts of Hagenwil moated castle.
The original farmhouse in Chatzerüti between Hefenhofen and Romanshorn, which dates back to 1626, is an exemplary reflection of Thurgau's history. Once characterized by agriculture with self-sufficient farm gardens, the region developed into a textile area. At the beginning of the 19th century, almost every house had a loom, a spinning wheel or, as in the Chatzerüti Hof, an embroidery machine for extra income. The Chatzerüti Hof was lovingly renovated in 2012 and is now available as a vacation home. In the old walls you can experience Thurgau's building and farming history combined with modern comfort.
The fishermen's houses in Romanshorn, built in 1670, once stood directly on the lakeshore and were used as accommodation for shipwrights, lard boilers and shoemakers. They are the last examples of fishermen's and craftsmen's dwellings from that time. Spending the night here is a special experience. The different wall coverings, winding room entrances and different floor levels reveal the long history of the houses. After careful renovation, today's bed and breakfast was created directly at Romanshorn railroad station and harbor for vacations in a listed building.
The Max Burkhardt House in Arbon, also known as the Sunflower House, is a wonderful place to spend a vacation. The decorative and artistic painter had the house built between 1904 and 1910 according to his own design. In its unity of architecture, interior design and artwork, the property is a total work of art. The two-room apartment on the second floor for two people allows guests to experience this work from April to October.
The Gasthaus zum Trauben in Weinfelden is a piece of Thurgau history. It has been an inn since 1550, initially for military captains. Later, the Thurgau court of justice met in the Trauben and in 1798 Paul Reinhart proclaimed the freedom of Thurgau here. The building, which is almost 500 years old, is one of Weinfelden's most valuable cultural assets. It has recently been rebuilt and renovated. The result is a mixture of the charm of the old and the elegance of the modern. The Gasthaus zum Trauben offers central accommodation in 14 bright hotel rooms with views of Weinfelden's town hall or church. The restaurant, wine cellar and terrace spoil guests.
The Restaurant - Hotel de charme Römerhof combines Arbon's history, culinary delights and warm hospitality. The building was constructed in the Middle Ages on Roman foundations and as part of the old town wall. The latter is still impressively visible today. The Römerhof was once a schoolhouse and library. Today it houses an award-winning restaurant, boutique hotel with eleven tastefully furnished rooms, sun terrace and cigar lounge. The central location in historic Arbon rounds off the offer.
From the "hobby room" of a wealthy engineering pioneer to a doctor's surgery and children's home to a youth hostel. This is the story of Villa Hörnliberg, built in 1853. The former luxury of the villa now delights hostel guests. The high ornate ceilings are an eye-catcher, the elevated position in the Seeburgpark Kreuzlingen and the richly decorated balconies offer a view of Lake Constance - less than two hundred meters away. Two canoes can be borrowed from the Jugi to explore the lake. The beautiful old town of Kreuzlingen or Constance, the harbors and train stations of both cities, bicycle rental, the lake museum and many cozy restaurants and spots on the shores of Lake Constance are just a few minutes' walk away.
