Train travel with a view, ship ahoy and the bike always at hand - this is what makes a vacation fun! The Rhine route between Kreuzlingen and Schaffhausen shows how easy it is to enjoy a relaxing cycling vacation in Eastern Switzerland
Discover the Rhine Route
The Rhine Route follows the Alpine river from its source to the Rhine ports of Basel. Stage 6, from Kreuzlingen to Schaffhausen, is particularly beautiful. The lovely landscape along the elongated Untersee lake attracted Napoleon. On this section, from Kreuzlingen to Schaffhausen, you cycle past pretty half-timbered houses and charming gardens.
The secret star of the show: the Untersee (Lower Lake). Between Berlingen and Steckborn, you cycle very close to the lake. The deep blue water is almost within reach.
“If someone runs out of breath, switching to public transport is easy.”
Breather in Thurbo
The route between Kreuzlingen and Schaffhausen is served by Thurbo every half hour - perfect for anyone who wants to take a breather by bike and continue their journey in a relaxed manner.
Lively Stein on the Rhine
Upon arrival in Stein am Rhein, the lively and well-kept historic town beckons with its impressive half-timbered houses, narrow streets, and the St. Georgen Monastery. Numerous cozy cafés and restaurants line the streets.
In Stein am Rhein it's "ship ahoy"!
The pace now remains constant
Here, Lake Constance becomes the Rhine. A ship from the Untersee und Rhein shipping company awaits at the harbor. It travels to either Schaffhausen or Kreuzlingen, stopping in many towns.
The ship glides gently past picturesque historic villages like Diessenhofen. When the water level is high, everyone has to duck their heads as they pass under the famous wooden bridge – including the ship itself! Here, it's the roof of the driver's cab that the ship's crew lowers.
"Go further and experience more by train, bus, and boat from Schaffhausen."
The gardening tradition on the Arenenberg dates back at least as far as the Middle Ages. Hortense de Beauharnais and the garden prince Pückler also brought the Arenenberg into bloom. Today, the diverse gardens are a popular destination for day-trippers and the viewing terrace in front of the castle is considered one of the most romantic places on Lake Constance.
Beautifully situated on the shores of Lake Constance, the Steckborn beach not only offers breathtaking views but also the perfect infrastructure for an unforgettable day by the water.
The Arenenberg in Thurgau is one of the most beautiful places on Lake Constance with its elevated position above Untersee, Arenenberg Castle and the park. The castle is home to the Napoleon Museum. Here you can see the original living quarters of Napoleon III's imperial family.
