Arbon - a town with history

The third-largest town in the canton of Thurgau on the southern shore of Lake Constance looks back on a rich history. Traces of pile dwellers and Roman town walls have been preserved. There is also an intact medieval old town to discover. Or the legacy of industrial pioneer Adolf Saurer with his motor vehicles. The glistening Lake Constance adorns Arbon's trains and invites you to enjoy refreshing water experiences. Thanks to its location close to the border triangle, excursions across the border to Germany or Austria are also possible.

Walk through Arbon's old town and follow in the footsteps of pile dwellers, Romans and pioneers. History comes to life on a guided tour: From a settlement from the Neolithic Age to Roman walls and the golden age of industrial culture with the Saurer family. The public guided tours take place from mid-June to mid-September on Tuesdays at 10 am and Sundays at 10.30 am.
Puzzle, paddle, discover: Water sports meet adventure on the PADL Trail Arbon. With the SUP or kayak, you set off from the Buchhorn lido along the lakeshore towards the old town - always on the trail of hidden clues. Tricky tasks await not only on the water, but also between the alleyways of the historic old town. The trail is perfect for anyone aged 16 and over who wants to experience Arbon from a completely new perspective.
The pressing plant in Arbon combines urban charm with industrial flair - a unique location in a historic brick hall. Originally built as an energy center for the Heine embroidery factory and later used by Adolph Saurer as a pressing plant, the building has been shining in new splendor since 2018 after extensive renovations. Light-flooded, high-ceilinged halls offer space for drinks receptions, concerts, festivities and creative events. Whether it's coffee with the family or dinner with friends - this is where people meet to celebrate, dance and enjoy themselves.
The Möhl cider factory in Arbon has been processing apples into juice, cider and apple wine since 1895. The museum on the company premises shows the history of fruit processing with antique presses, fruit mills and laboratory equipment. The exhibition also tells the story of the Möhl family. At interactive stations, guests can experience how the cidery has developed and take a look into the future. Films about fruit growers, beverage technologists, beekeepers and distillers provide exciting insights into the professions associated with the cidery. There are also delicious tastings.
One of the most interesting families that shaped the past of the town of Arbon was the Saurer family. Their company, Adolf Saurer AG, was for a long time the most important Swiss manufacturer of trucks. The Saurer Museum brings this past to life and guides visitors through the history of motor vehicles and later also textile machines manufactured in Arbon. Today, production no longer takes place in Arbon, but various buildings and sites are still reminiscent of the era. Right next to the museum, the atmospheric Saurer Garten open-air bar on the shores of Lake Constance invites you to linger. With creative drinks, a beautiful view of the lake and the converted historic Saurer Postbus as a bad-weather alternative, it offers an urban atmosphere combined with a relaxed lakeside feeling.
Arbon's eventful past began almost 5500 years ago with a pile-dwelling settlement. Then came the Romans, the Middle Ages, the modern era and industrialization. Arbon bears vivid witness to each era. Incidentally, Arbon is a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its pile-dwelling settlement, which is now well preserved under a parking lot. The Historical Museum in Arbon Castle has a great exhibition on the subject and many original finds. Parts of the old town wall and towers have been preserved from Roman times. They can be discovered on a cleverly designed discovery tour around the castle. In just 15 minutes, 5500 years of Arbon's eventful history are presented here.
Located directly on Lake Constance, the Buchhorn campsite offers families a view of the lake, a large sunbathing lawn, a playground and free access to the neighboring lido. Guests can stay overnight in a tent, caravan or in a cozy POD house. Just a few steps away, the Seerestaurant Buchhorn serves fish crispies, Buchhorn burgers and a sunny terrace. It is perfect for enjoyable moments or festive occasions by the lake. The campsite and restaurant are located directly on the lakeside cycle path.
With over 25 exciting attractions, the ArboPark is the largest indoor leisure park in Switzerland. From go-karts and DriftPark to mixed reality and AR darts, everything is included. Skill and team spirit are required here, whether with family, friends or in a team. The bistro provides breaks. Thanks to the covered hall and evening opening hours, the park can be experienced whatever the weather. It is only 10 minutes from Arbon train station and has 400 parking spaces on site.
The veranda on the Arbon beach promenade invites you to linger with a view of Lake Constance. The menu includes fresh, regional snacks and a wide selection of drinks. Thanks to its relaxed atmosphere and beautiful location, the Veranda is a popular meeting place for locals and guests alike.
