Altnau and the surrounding area - between the Lake Constance cycle path and orchards

In the sunny corner of Thurgau, on the southern shore of Lake Constance around the village of Altnau, the climate is particularly mild. A moraine from the former Rhine glacier rises protectively behind the lake. It allows typical Thurgau fruits such as apples and berries to thrive here. In this still very rural and idyllic region with its magnificent orchards, visitors find peace and tranquillity - and more hours of sunshine than anywhere else in Thurgau.

Land of apples

The rural region between Kreuzlingen and Romanshorn is truly the center of the apple. And Thurgau's sun lounge! If you believe the local weather station, Güttingen is not only the Thurgau champion in terms of hours of sunshine, but occasionally even the Swiss champion. No wonder fruit thrives so well here. There are around 300,000 apple trees in Altnau alone. The village even has a "stem": the longest footbridge on Lake Constance at 270 meters. There is an apple trail here, an exciting themed trail all about the red-cheeked fruit. In spring, when the orchards turn white from the endless blossoms of the apple trees, the Blueschtfest takes place here. In the fall, the apple week is celebrated.

With Thurbo to the most beautiful swimming pools

Familiar and down-to-earth - that's what the lidos and bathing spots on Lake Constance, Untersee and the Rhine between Arbon and Diessenhofen are like. Güttingen lido, for example, is perfect for a family outing on hot summer days. Pack a rucksack with swimming gear and all sorts of things for the barbecue. Everything else is on site. Instead of searching for a parking space, you can take the Thurbo regional train line to the lake.

Hiking with a view of the lake and mountain

Between Kreuzlingen and Romanshorn, directly behind Lake Constance, rises a moraine of the former Rhine glacier, today's Seerücken. In addition to a mild climate for good fruit growing, this ridge also offers hikers in the region a wonderful panoramic view. On one side of the ridge you can see the Säntis, on the other Lake Constance. During the blossom season, a sea of white blossom pours over the orchards in the area.

Cheeky little fruits on the Altnau apple trail

The apple trail near Altnau on Lake Constance is an exciting adventure tour with 24 information boards and various hands-on stations about the red-cheeked fruit. Guides in the form of the apple mascots "Emma", "Lisi" and "Fredi" lead visitors on three routes through the apple groves. The apple trail can be experienced on foot, with a baby carriage, by bike or in a horse-drawn carriage.

Explore the Lake Constance region by boat

The sunny corner of Thurgau from Uttwil to Landschlacht is well served by the Swiss Lake Constance Navigation Company. With Uttwil, Güttingen and Altnau, there are three landing stages in the sunny corner. The latter two enable cross-lake excursions to the German shore to Hagnau or Immenstaad. During the summer season, scheduled boats also travel along the Swiss shore and stop in Uttwil and Altnau. Hiking or cycling along the shore can therefore be perfectly combined with a boat trip, making excursions in the region varied and relaxing.
