The medieval Neuburg ruins above Mammern are not only the largest and most important castle complex on the southern shore of Untersee, they are also the best preserved. Thanks to the barbecue area and play facilities, it is not only popular with walkers.
Around the middle of the 13th century, the barons of Klingen built the keep and the The castle is first mentioned in a document in 1274. Together with Hohenklingen ob Stein am Rhein, the new castle served to monitor trade on the Untersee. From the 14th century onwards, Neuburg Castle underwent numerous changes of ownership. Until the 17th century, the castle was repeatedly extended and rebuilt. The history of what was once the largest castle on Untersee is vividly explained on two display boards. Driving is prohibited on the road to the castle, so it can only be reached on foot.
