Chapel of St. Martin

Chapel of St. Martin
The chapel of St. Martin, picturesquely situated on a hill near Oberwangen, dates back to the 10th century. The chapel was restored in 1693 after being struck by lightning and extended in 1730 with the addition of the cupola by Jakob and Johannes Grubenmann.
The chapel is architecturally unconventional and has a rustic charm. It blends harmoniously into the pre-alpine landscape characterized by small-scale farming. The large, gleaming silver relief of St. Martin, whom farmers ask to protect their livestock, forms the center of the altar, which has been described as a "true peasant baroque wonder". The small organ in the gallery by Joseph Hund from Lommis also deserves special mention. According to experts, the small work is a dream that surprises with its refreshing, room-filling sound.
