Three famous Baroque works, Bach's motet "Jesu meine Freude" BWV 227, Buxtehude's cantata "Alles was ihr tut" BuxWV 4, and the fugue BWV 538 form the core of the concert.
The Stefanschor Kreuzlingen cordially invites you to this year's summer choir concert in the beautiful church of St. Stefan Kreuzlingen-Emmishofen! Together with the Kreuzlinger Kantatenkollegium, the Caminochor Altnau and the Ensemble Canterino Kreuzlingen, several great works are on the program this year. Three famous baroque works, with Bach's motet "Jesu meine Freude" BWV 227, Buxtehude's cantata "Alles was ihr tut" BuxWV 4, and the famous fugue (Die Dorische) BWV 538 in an arrangement for choir and orchestra by conductor Nicolas Borner, form the core of the concert and will be solemnly concluded by the neo-romantic Thurgau Jubilee Mass by former cathedral conductor from Brixen Heinrich Walder. It will be a very impressive sound in the magnificent large church of St. Stefan! With over 60 singers and a remarkably large proportion of men, the choir is very impressive and well-balanced and will offer you a very festive program. As the choir has great supporters and is an integral part of the Catholic parish of Kreuzlingen, the concert will be free of charge. There will be a collection to cover the costs. Johann Sebastian Bach's motet BWV 227 "Jesu, meine Freude" is based on a hymn by Johann Franck and texts from Romans 8. It focuses on Christian hope and the overcoming of death and sin. The motet is artfully scored for five voices and divided into eleven movements that combine chorales and biblical texts in a variety of ways. Polyphonic choral movements alternate with simple chorales, creating an expressive balance. Bach's masterful counterpoint and emotional depth make BWV 227 a highlight of his vocal music. Dietrich Buxtehude's cantata BuxWV 4 "Alles, was ihr tut" is based on Colossians 3:17 and focuses on the Christian way of life. The text calls on us to perform all deeds in the name of Jesus and to give thanks to God. The cantata combines simple, clear melodies with ornate baroque embellishments. Choral movements, arias and recitatives alternate, impressively conveying the text. Buxtehude's skillful use of harmony and contrasts emphasizes the central message. With BuxWV 4, he created a work that impresses with its simple depth and musical expressiveness. Johann Sebastian Bach's BWV 538, also known as the Toccata and Fugue in D minor "Dorian", is an impressive organ work that captivates with its powerful, motor-driven toccata and complex, ornate fugue. In contrast to the better-known Toccata BWV 565, BWV 538 dispenses with virtuoso showmanship and instead displays Bach's masterful counterpoint and structural rigor. The "Dorian" epithet comes from the lack of accidentals, although the piece is actually in D minor. Conductor Nicolas Borner has created an arrangement of the fugue for choir and orchestra, using the texts from the Ordinary of the Mass. The festive mass by Heinrich Walder called "Thurgauer Jubiläumsmesse" was composed especially for this occasion in 2022 for the 150th anniversary of the Catholic Church Music Association Thurgau by former cathedral conductor Heinrich Walder from Brixen and will be played again at this concert in St. Stefan's with timpani and trumpets. The choir under the direction of church musician, organist and conductor Nicolas Borner is looking forward to welcoming you to this special concert! Treat yourself to a festive highlight of the beginning of summer with this music! The Thurgau Jubilee Mass can also be heard in the solemn service for the Feast of the Sacred Heart on the same day at 09:30 in St. Stefan. D.
